“So much of life, it seems to me, is determined by pure randomness.” Sidney Poitier
I love randomness and the insights seemingly insignificant facts about a person can give you. When I was a journalism major I would throw in different questions that didn’t have to do with the story because I loved to uncover interesting tidbits about people. I now do it to friends, authors, coworkers and people I have just met. If I ever meet you, I’ll probably do the same thing. Consider yourself warned. I just think there are better questions than the standard rigamarole, “What do you do?” “Where are you from?” blah blah blah.
I love people. I love learning what makes them wake up in the morning. What makes them tic? So many times it’s those random things that give us a glimpse into who a person is. Sometimes they are just funny which are great too. Either way, I don’t discount the random. I would even say I value it. So when a blog-friend-I-would-like-to-meet, Beth from Eat.Drink.Smile challenged me to post 7 random things about myself, I decided I should give it a shot. It’s odd being on the answering side of this question.
7 random facts you wouldn’t otherwise know…
1. Every year around Valentine’s, I always re-read one of my favorite books- Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
Two things. First, I adore books. I love the way they smell, look and feel, the way they transport you to different places and times and how when you finish a great book, you wish you could meet the characters. However…second, I don’t remember books. (look, you’re getting 2-for-1 here). It’s a strange phenomenon. The good news is, I can always go back to my favorites. Pride and Prejudice is one those so every year about this time I re-read it. Nothing like a love story where the heroine is a strong, vibrant, passionate strong-willed woman who meets her match and they force each other to grow. The cover pictured here is a Penguin Classic. They teamed up with fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo to create this masterpiece.
2. I have been to Kenya.
I haven’t been able to talk about this a lot because I haven’t been able to do it much yet but I love to travel. As much as I value home, I can’t think of anything that makes me feel more alive than traveling to a new place, learning new customs, languages, and meeting new people. Kenya gave me a taste and I was hooked. I rode an elephant, picked tea leaves with the locals, played with the children, built an outhouse, learned some Swahili, and learned about life from the Maasai tribe. I miss it. I can’t wait to travel, learn and explore the corners of the world with those I love.
3. One of my favorite hobbies is people watching.
Like I said, I love people. I always make up stories about what I think they’re doing, where they’re going, who they’re with. I haven’t been able to do it lately but there really isn’t a better Sunday afternoon than sitting at Fido with a good book, a cup of coffee and watching the world go by.
4. I want to publish a book one day.
Lofty I know, but since I was a little girl I have loved to write. I’m fascinated by the written word and by the power it has to inspire, challenge, comfort, change and transport people.
5. I had what doctors call Geographic Tongue when I was little.
Please trust me on this. Don’t Google image it. A- Because it will gross you out and B- I’m sure what you see pictured is much more severe than the case I have/had. In elementary through middle school,
a glass of OJ, spaghetti sauce, or even slices of tomatoes would make parts of my tongue swell up in shapes resembling a map, which for a little Italian girl was nothing less than a curse. Glad that’s over.
6. I have a tattoo.
7. I am deathly afraid of E.T.
I hesitate to write this because I have friends who see it as their goal in life to give me a hard time which honestly I appreciate and respect because lets be honest…I do the same thing. Please do not dress up like E.T., send me emails with his picture or make me go on the ride for a second time at Universal…because I’ve already been scarred by it once.
That’s all for now. Like Beth, I’m going to tag Chic Runner, Abby Leigh, Jennifer Justus, and Lindsey Nobles to do that same. These ladies are smart, witty, interesting, have wonderful things to say, err, write and are just all around fantastic. So even if we don’t get to learn 7 new things about them it would be well worth your time to check them out.
So what’s one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know?
Update: Check out what Jennifer Justus had to say here. See what she’d want her last meal to be and who she’d invite to her dinner party!
